  • Death*: 30 March 1860; Hamilton Co., Tennessee; "On the 30th ultimo, JAMES LATTY, an old citizen of this county [sic] in the 102nd year of his age. He was a native of North Carolina, but had lived on the head waters of Brierfork for two generations. He volunteered in the revolutionary war; but his father, being in a helpless condition, furnished means for a substitute for his son."--The Southern Advocate, Huntsville, April 11, 1860.

    from Lew Griffin:
This article seems to be based on a good bit of hearsay. But it could only refer to the John Latta who was in Hamilton County, TN in 1850, and who must have died there. James might have been his father. Perhaps one or more of John's children lived near Huntsville and mentioned their father's death to the newspaper, and since 102 was a remarkable age, they published this article, although they garbled some of the facts. That's my best guess as to what's going on here.10,11
