JACKSON GENEALOGY (Author Unknown, written early 1965)

Mark Jackson was born August 11, 1827, on a plantation near Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of Peter and Sarah Jackson and was an only child.

When he was home one year, after finishing college, he came upon one of the slaves cursing his father at the Blacksmith shop. He went into a rage and hit the slave on the head with a hoe handle and thought he killed him, but the slave survived. Instead of getting into legal trouble, as he felt he would, he left home without telling his family where he was going.

He started walking, as he had no other way to travel, and met up with a wagon train going to the Cherokee Nation. He took a job driving cattle for one of the families for 60¢ a day. They traveled 850 miles before they stopped to settle near Clarksville, Arkansas.

Mark did not contact his parents until years later, when he took his family back to see them by Wagon.

He fought in the Mexican War in 1847 - 1848 and was discharged at Monterrey, Mexico. The Army gave his company of one hundred men the choice of returning home by boat or horseback. They chose horse, so each was given a fresh horse and they road in a company across country to Arkansas. On their way they saw many Indian Warriors with bows and arrows, however they were never attacked, as they always kept their carbine rifles out in open sight. When Mark arrived back in Clarksville, Arkansas he took a job with a General Merchandise Store for $1.00 per day and board.

In 1878 he became a postmaster. He also participated in the laying of the corner stone of the Masonic Lodge building at Graffic, Arkansas. His son, Neal, was with him on this occasion.

Mark Jackson was married to Melvina Jane Swagarty, January 18, 1848 in Johnson County, Arkansas. Children that survived this marriage were - Oscar, Solon, Caroline, George, John and Newman.

He married Trecy Jane Durham in 1865. Children surviving this marriage were - Melvina, Logan, Walker, Elizabeth, Benton and Neal. Neal is the only living child today. His age is 85 years on April 20th.

This information written by Mark Jackson in the family Bible, which was purchased in 1850.

Other Items in the Bible -

A pass given to Mark Jackson and family of seven persons to travel from Cherokee Nation to Fort Scott, Kansas - property consists of two yolk of cattle and one black horse. Signed by J. F. Shields, Lt. & Provost Marshall (Asst.) Van Buren, Arkansas on May 25, 1864.
