David Stewart

• Note*: May 1958; David Stewart ... was a soldier in Maj. Samuel Heatherly's battalion of Rowan county militia in the Revolutionary war, as state in Lenage Book 148, page 36, D. A. R. (1933). He was probably a son of Peter Stewart (p. 245). It is difficult to find him in Rowan county records. He went to Pennsylvania, his descendants say. He married Barbara [maiden name unknown], who was born in 1771, so the marriage would have taken place about 1788. She died in 1816, and he died in 1828, in Pennsylvania. The deed records of Allegheny county, Pa., show that David Stewart, a blacksmith, of Ross township, leased May 22, 1811, of James Ross, for $600, 235 acres, allotment number 76 in Cunningham's district, witnesses to the agreement being George W. Ross and John A. Scull [deeds, 32:486]. Ten years later, Apr. 28, 1821, David Stewart, sr., of Stewart Town [now Etna], Indiana township, Allegheny county, transferred to David Stewart, jr., the title to the above property, where the younger David then lived, and David jr. was to pay James Ross $400, and both were to pay Ross the balance. The witnesses were Mathew Crawford and Christian Love. Later the son David, whose wife was also named Barbara, "of the village of Stewart Town and township of Indiana, and Barbara his wife," sold a part interest in the business to Alfred G. LLoyd. The property was alongside the Butler-Pittsburg turnpike and adjoined land owned by John Stewart. David, jr., bought some property in Indiana township of David Anderson and his wife Jean on May 27, 1827, while the old man was still living. David, sr., seems not to have made a will, from which the names of his children might be learned. David Anderson and wife Jean of Indiana township made a deed Sep. 9, 1833, to William Stewart of the same township, who may have been one of David's sons. The only one of David's children mentioned in the D. A. R. lineage book was David, 1789; m. Barbara Miller: died in 1850.¹

• Note*: May 1958; Lazarus Stewart married ... Agnes _____. He died Dec. 2, 1781. On Feb 4, 1782, Agnes Stewart, his widow, gave bond in the sum of £ 200 as administratrix of his estate, her securities being James Pettycrew, sr. of Hanover township and John McClintock of Lebanon township, Lancaster county. An inventory of the estate was filed the same day. The widow married William Cunningham, by who she had three children -- Sarah, born Feb __, 178_, Robert, born May 16, 1784; and William, born Mar. 16, 1788. William Cunningham, the husband, died Mar. 12, 1789. Agnes married, for her third husband, _____ Hill, by whom she had a son -- Thomas, born Apr. 9, 1793. She and Mr. Hill moved to Allegheny county about the year 1800, residing probably in Allegheny, a town on the ... side of the Allegheny river, opposite Pittsburgh. No record of her death has been found. By Lazarus she had two children, Lazarus, born Dec. 7, 1779, m (1) 1807. • Note*: July 1958; Robert Boyd Stewart, born Aug. 1, 1817, in Crawford county, Indiana, moved with his parents to Adams county, Illinois, some time in the 1820's. His father died soon after locating in Illinois, and the widow became a convert to the teachings of Joseph Smith at Nauvoo. After Smith's assassination in 1844 his disciples planned to leave the United States and settle in Utah, at that time part of Mexico. Robert Boyd Stewart, at the age of 28, was assigned to Company D, led by Capt. St. Gerard Cooke of the Mormon battalion, to guard the migrating host on its long trek westward. He married, about 1860, Margaret (McCullough) Carpenter Gheen, twice widowed and mother of five children. They made their home in Salt Lake City, where two children were born to them:
