  • (Deceased) Death*: 1818; Jasper Co., Georgia
  • Research Note*: 8 January 2005; He may have been the George "Wholsell" who was on a 1790 Tax Digest in Wilkes Co. GA.

Our earliest certain record for George Jr. is in Bulloch Co., GA.
Bulloch Co. GA Deeds, Book ?, Page 89, 14 Dec 1803, recorded 6 Apr 1805: John Goldsmith, planter, to GEORGE HALSELL, both of Bulloch, $100 for 150 acres on the north side of Poley branch originally granted to Alexander Lane Jr.; bounded on the north by the land of Stephebn Denmark, on the south by the land of Alexander Lane Jr. Wit: Stephen Denmark, Frederick Bunce.

Years later, in 1845 in Chambers Co, AL, John Goldsmith's son, Matthew Caswell Goldsmith married George Halsey's daughter Martha. John Goldsmith, his wife, and George's widow all died in Chambers Co. That the two families kept in touch over a period of 40 or more years indicates they were probably relatives.

In Mar 1804 George Halsell bought Lot 8 in Statesborough (Bulloch Co.) for $21.25. Bulloch Co. GA Deeds, Book ?, Page 90, 10 Mar 1804, recorded 6 Apr 1805: John Everitt, Francis Kennedy & Hustus Studstill, Commissioners of Bulloch Co. sold to GEORGE HALSELL for $21.25, Lot #8, South Savannah Street, said lot having been bought by said Commissioners at public sale at the Courthouse in Statesborough. Wit: Charles McCall, J. P.In Dec 1803, John Goldsmith sold to George Halsell, for $100, 150 acres on the north side of Poley Branch in Bulloch Co.

George Holsey was in the 1805 GA Land Lottery as a resident of Bulloch Co.

Around 1804 he married Martha, who was born in 1780. This marriage may have taken place in Bulloch Co. George's eldest known son, William, was born in Jan 1806.

In Feb 1807, Perkins Fitzpatrick of Morgan Co. sold to George Halsell of Morgan, for $500, Lot 132 in the 15th District of Putnam County, 202.5 acres. By 1818 George was in Jasper Co. GA, as he died there that year, leaving his wife Martha and five small children. (Jasper WB 2-374)

In Jan 1822 the court "ordered that Martha Halsey have leave to sell 25 acres in Jasper Co. adjoining the heirs of John Henderson, it being the real estate of George Halsey, dec'd, to be sold for the benefit of the heirs of said dec'd." (Jasper Minutes 1-226) In 1821 Martha "Holson," widow, won Lot 38 in the Second District of Monroe Co., later Pike Co. Soon thereafter she and the children moved to Pike Co.

In Oct 1834 Martha sold part of this lot to Edward McElroy. (Pike Co. DB D-196) In Jan 1835 she sold the remainder of the lot to James R. Halsey, her son. (Pike Co. DB D-282) Martha and children William, George Allen, and Martha, then moved to Chambers Co. AL, where widow Martha died in 1841.
