Belcher was the mother of Messrs. J.W. and T.L. Belcher of this place. She
had been a conscientious member of the Methodist Church since 1840. She
leaves a large number of relatives and friends to mourn her death.

OBITUARY FOR MRS. SARAH ANN BELCHER (Nee Stricklen)

Mrs. Sarah Ann Belcher (nee Stricklen) was born August 31, 1826; married Wm.
Belcher May 9, 1844 and died Feb 2, 1908, lacking only a few months of being
82 years old. Her husband died about five years ago after a married life of
about 59 years. There were born to them 9 children, 4 sons and 5 daughters.
All the sons and 4 of the daughter survive father and mother, one having died
some years ago. There are numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Sister Belcher joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1840, and
during all these 68 years had been a loyal and consistent member of the
church, delighting in its services and cheerfully obedient to its laws. Except
for something out of the ordinary, she was always in her accustomed place at
church and we shall miss her presence on the Sabbaths to come. In her home
she was kind and hospitable, delighting in the companionship of her friends
and neighbors. As her pastor it has been my privilege to know her and enjoy
her hospitality, and it was always pleasant to be in her company and in her
home. It has been the custom of her children and relatives to have an annual
reunion on her birthday, when all who were near enough assembled at the old
home and enjoyed themselves in her companionship.

Upright in her life, kind to all, she enjoyed the respect and love of those
who knew her. Now her life here is ended and she has entered into that
fullnessf life that belongeth to the children of god. Blessed are the dead
which die in the lord for their works do follow them. Mourned by her children
and all who knew her, her mortal remains rest beside her husband, awaiting
christ's coming to make up his jewels. Her children rise up and call her
    blessed. Her Pastor, J.C. Francis

  • (Deceased) Death*: 16 May 1903; Five Points, Chambers Co., Alabama; W B BELCHER DEAD
    ----------------------------

Mr W B BELCHER, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Chambers county, died
at his home in Five Points at 11:00 last Saturday night, after a long illness. He was 83
years and 27 days old and had been a citizen of Chambers about 43 years. For a longer
time than that probably he had been a member of the Methodist church. The services were
conducted by his pastor, Dr SLAUGHTER, Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large
congregation of friends and relatives. The deceased was the father of Messrs J W, T L and
J M BELCHER, of this place [Roanoke]. In addition to the relatives, a number of the
friends of the family attended the funeral from Roanoke.

One disclaimer – the photos were labled by my paternal grandmother in the 1980’s. Once a year, I lose sleep that he might actually be another grandfather East. But I have decided to trust she was right. Where the doubt comes in is that William B Belcher was described in the past as having lost a leg in the civil war – but in my research, I found that it was another grandfather. If my dad was wrong about that….

Larkin McEwen Strickland

M, b. 1 January 1837
  • Last Edited: 24 Jan 2020
  • (Child) Birth*: 1 January 1837; Troup Co., Georgia
  • (household member) 1850 Census: 1 June 1850; Randolph Co., Alabama; Principal=Margarett Stewart1
  • Photographed*: say 1860; from Lew Griffin, 11 October 2019:
The elder Larkin died in 1848 at the age of 49. The fellow in the photo looks younger than that to me, suggesting the photo was earlier than 1848 if it were the Larkin born in 1799. The daguerreotype was invented in 1839l. There were other processes before that. I'm not sure what would have been available in rural Alabama at that early date. Does it look like a tintype?

From Terrence White, current owner of the original photo, 12 Oct 2019:

As for the photo of "Larkin Strickland" ... It is clearly a tintype, and not an earlier daguerreotype. How do I know this for certain? Well, it completely lacks the noticeable, obvious silvery sheen that all daguerreotypes must have, in order to be that medium (since the image was exposed directly onto a plate of silver-plated copper.) It looks exactly like every other dull brown tintype I've ever seen. It is also definitely not an "ambrotype" (also common in that early period) because they were made on plates of glass. I have two of those. One from my Mom's family, and one that's unidentified and not from any part of my ancestry at all.

The Wikipedia article about "tintypes" which I just now consulted says that the process was first described scientifically in 1853, and first patented in the United States in 1856. So that should settle the matter. (Even though this photograph IS placed in the photo album exactly opposite the tintype of Margaret "Peggy" Stewart, the elder Larkin's wife.)

This photo was originally misidentified by Lurline Davis Parker (1890 - 1984), daughter of Madison Davis, granddaughter of Mary Strickland Davis, and great granddaughter of Larkin Sr, when she placed this photo beside a photo of Margarett Stewart Strickland in her family album. Mr. White, mentioned above, currently owns this album, and is aware of the error.; Father=Larkin Strickland2
unknown Strickland, possibly Larkin M. Strickland
